My GitHub Copilot Journey - Part 7: Fixing a Big Issue (and What It Means)

Overview

Today I had a deployment that was working yesterday. Today it wasn't. What followed was one of those debugging sessions that perfectly illustrates both the power and the economics of working with GitHub Copilot.

If you've been following this series (starting with Part 1: The First Ask ), you know the progression: from quick questions, to deep conversations, to infrastructure automation, to multi-agent squads. This post is about what happens when that infrastructure fights back — and how the tool helps you win. (And then, in a beautifully meta moment, I asked the tool to calculate its own cost. More on that later. 😊)

The cascade

I had a web application deployed on a container platform in Azure. Yesterday: working. Today: deployment hanging indefinitely. The container just wouldn't start.

Now, in the old days (I'm talking about a few months ago, to be honest), this would have been my workflow:

  1. Stare at the deployment logs
  2. Google the error message
  3. Read three forum posts from 2023 that don't quite match my setup
  4. Try something random
  5. Break something else
  6. Repeat for 2-3 hours

Instead, I described the problem to Copilot: "the deployment seems to take forever... I have a feeling the app isn't becoming available."

What followed was a cascade of discoveries:

Layer 1: The container crash-loop. Copilot identified that the application was failing to connect to its database. Not a code issue — a connectivity issue.

Layer 2: The policy enforcement. Turns out, an Azure Policy (likely pushed by my organization's security team) had silently disabled public access on the database. The database was still there, the credentials were still correct, but the network path was gone. (I won't pretend I would have found this quickly on my own — this is exactly the kind of thing you can spend an entire afternoon on without making progress.)

Layer 3: The architecture redesign. Once we understood the problem, the fix wasn't "undo the policy" — it was "design the infrastructure properly." Copilot proposed a VNet integration with private endpoints: the container platform talks to the database through a private subnet, satisfying the policy while keeping everything functional.

Layer 4: The deployment issue. The new VNet-integrated environment couldn't pull container images (outbound connectivity was restricted). Solution: deploy to a clean resource group with proper networking from the start.

Layer 5: The auth redirect. New deployment, new URL. The authentication system was still pointing at the old URL. One more fix.

Five layers. Each one revealed by solving the previous one. In a single conversation.

Why this matters

To me, the interesting thing here is not that Copilot fixed the issue (although it did, and I'm grateful 😊). The interesting thing is the pattern of how the fix happened.

Each layer required a different kind of knowledge:

  • Layer 1: Container platform runtime behavior
  • Layer 2: Azure Policy and governance (organizational compliance)
  • Layer 3: Network architecture design (VNet, private endpoints, subnets)
  • Layer 4: Container registry connectivity and CI/CD pipeline adjustments
  • Layer 5: Identity platform configuration (redirect URIs, app registrations)

No single human would typically have deep expertise in all of these simultaneously. You'd normally need to involve a platform engineer, a security specialist, a networking expert, and an identity admin. Or — and this is the point — you'd need one person with a tool that spans all those domains.

Pro Tip: When you hit a cascading failure like this, resist the urge to fix each layer independently. Describe the full picture to Copilot (what you're trying to achieve, what broke, what you've already tried) and let it identify the root cause chain. The tool is remarkably good at connecting dots across domains that we'd normally silo into separate teams.

(I realize this sounds like I'm overselling it, but I genuinely went from "deployment broken" to "fully working with proper private networking" in about 15 turns of conversation. That's... not normal.)

The meta-question: what did this cost?

Here's where it gets interesting — and honestly, a bit fun.

At the end of the session, I asked Copilot a question I've been wondering about for a while: "What did this debugging session actually cost in terms of GitHub Copilot usage? And how much time did you save me?"

I had been using a premium model (Claude Opus 4.6) for this session, which consumes premium requests at a 3× multiplier per interaction. The rough math:

And then — because I was curious — I asked it to estimate how long this would have taken manually, broken down by experience level:

(I won't go into the exact methodology here — these are estimates, not science. But the ballpark feels right to me based on my own experience with similar issues in the past.)

The takeaway: ~3-4% of my monthly Copilot budget saved me somewhere between 2 and 16 hours of work. Even at the conservative end (senior engineer, 2 hours saved), that's an extraordinary return on investment. At the realistic end (I'm somewhere between mid and senior for most of these domains), we're talking about a half-day of debugging compressed into 45 minutes.

The meta-meta moment

And here's what I find beautiful about this: I asked the tool to calculate its own value. And it did. With specifics, with breakdowns, with honest caveats about the estimates.

To me, this is the most "Part 7" thing about this post. In Part 1 , I was asking basic questions and verifying every answer. Now I'm asking the tool to do economic analysis of its own usage. That's a trust level that would have felt absurd eight weeks ago.

It's also a genuinely useful exercise. If you're advocating for GitHub Copilot adoption in your team or organization, having concrete cost/time data from real sessions is worth more than any marketing slide. (And Copilot will happily help you generate that analysis for your own sessions.)

The lesson

If there's one thing I want you to take from this post, it's this:

The most valuable Copilot sessions are often the ones you didn't plan.

I didn't wake up this morning thinking "today I'll redesign my network architecture and calculate the ROI of AI tooling." I woke up thinking "I'll add a small feature." Then something broke, and the tool helped me not just fix it, but fix it properly — with better infrastructure than I had before.

The debugging session produced an architecture that's objectively more secure and more production-ready than what I started with. The issue wasn't just fixed — it was an upgrade in disguise.
